Cherryville Studio: My Approach

My Approach/Rate Info - May 12, 2005

Today I launched my new teaching website, which I hope will bring my students one more added benefit from my lessons. I will use this website to connect and interact with my students during the week, so that the lessons are not just a once-a-week quick fix. I will be available for email help, as well as be here to suggest links to online resources that will support and broaden the lesson materials.

Most teachers of my calibre will have you sign a strict contract, which I just philosophically will not do. We are working together as partners in your, or your child's education, and my approach is one of mutual respect. I will ask for the same basic terms as these contracts, but I will not have you sign anything. My only rule is that I do not teach those younger than 10, as I have learned that this is about the age that a student is ready to undertake music studies. My lessons are fun, but they require a "school-like" effort. This rule is for you, not for me. It is because I care about your results.

My lessons are $45 per hour for a lesson at my comfortable studio, or $50 per hour for an in-your-home lesson, and considering my drive time and the price of gas, this works out to be quite fair. I schedule the 60 minute lesson for 75 minutes, so you do not pay for my setup and breakdown times. I also will not leave a lesson in the middle of an explanation. I only ask that if you have to cancel a lesson, that you give me 24 hours notice. I do not penalize you for this, as many others do, and only ask that you make cancellations as infrequent as possible. I know things come up in busy lives, and I hope that we can both respect each other's schedules.

I also offer a discount of one free lesson if you book 3 months of lessons in advance (something you may want to condsider, not at the outset, but further down the road).
